Idealism

Power of Idealism characters often play the role of the rebel, the romantic, the outsider, the iconoclast, the artist, or the maverick.  They are the angry young man or the passionate young woman in a Coming of Age Story.  These young characters struggle to grow up, distinguish themselves as individuals and find their place in a world where they just don’t seem to fit.

Power of Idealism characters also often play the role of Epic Hero.  These characters battle for honor and/or glory in an impossible fight, and die a noble death on the battlefield.  (Note:  This is a very different character than the Mythic Hero/Reluctant Hero described by Joseph Campbell.  That is the Power of Imagination character.)

The third kind of role these Character Types play is the romantic who is separated from his or her one true love.  These Separated Lovers are destined not to be joined in physical union on this mortal earth.  Instead, they share a love that transcends time, distance, age or death.

Whether treading the Dark Side or fighting on the side of light, these characters play roles that aspire to the impossible, extraordinary, immortal or transcendent.  Power of Idealism characters are intensely passionate (or rebellious) and everyone in the story immediately recognizes and acknowledges that their role is somehow special or  “larger than than life.”

Slumdog Millionaire: Loss and Hope

by Laurie H. Hutzler

slumdogThis month’s Notes from the Writers Room looks at Slumdog Millionaire, my pick for the best Christmas release of 2008.  I was initially reluctant to see the film.  After viewing several downbeat movies recently, along with the relentless gloom and doom on the news, I haven’t felt very inspired or optimistic in the run-up to the holidays.  Friends persuaded me otherwise in regard to this film.  It turns out this is a very special story indeed.

Slumdog Millionaire
is set in truly horrific circumstances, involving extreme poverty and the foulest kind of child exploitation.  I also discovered it is a Power of Idealism film about the triumph of love and the human spirit.  It is must-see viewing this holiday season.  I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The Classic Epic Hero

 By Laurie H, Hutzler

300This month, Notes from the Writers Room looks at the emotional content of 300. Why is this film such a roaring success despite its scathing reviews? The Rotten Tomatoes website consensus is, “A simple-minded but visually exciting experience, full of blood, violence, and ready-made movie quotes." Why does this "simple minded" film resonate so powerfully with the audience?

The Epic Hero Fights a Noble but Doomed Battle

by Laurie H. Hutzler

epic-heroThe Epic Hero is different than the Mythic Hero, described Joseph Campbell.  These two dramatic characters diverge in several key respects.  To mix or confuse these two types of heroes muddies a story and blurs the protagonist’s emotional journey.

Recent Disappointments

In the last few months four films made this fatal mistake.  As a result, The Last Samurai, The Alamo, Hidalgo and Troy all have under-performed at the domestic box office.  The Last Samurai and Troy did find more success internationally.   But none of these films received wide-spread critical acclaim.  Why were American critics and audiences so dissatisfied?

How can you avoid the pitfalls that bedeviled these projects?  How can you benefit from what these films did right?

Volver
Loss, Memory and Forgiveness

By Laurie H. Hutzler

volverThis issue of Notes from the Writers Room looks at Volver, Pedro Almodovar’s wonderful new film. Volver means “to return” or “to come back” in Spanish. The film is a transcendent story about love, loss and forgiveness in families.

Volver has six extraordinary performances by actresses, who shared the acting prize at Cannes, and is generating a well-deserved Oscar buzz for Penélope Cruz. It is a must see movie in this 2006 Christmas season.
