Reason

Power of Reason characters see the world as a series of intellectual, practical or scientific problems, dilemmas or puzzles to be solved.  They believe anything and everything can be explained rationally or solved logically.  They examine the situation carefully, consult other expert opinion or past experience and put their minds to the issue in a thorough and objective fashion.

These characters cannot abide deviation from their systematic and orderly approach to the world.  They tend to discount or ignore emotional or spiritual (or supernatural) factors in a situation or a problem.

Power of Reason characters don’t believe in getting personally involved or emotionally entangled in an issue.  They always try to maintain a sense of cool detachment and objectivity.

A character driven by the Power of Reason is most often the expert, technician, scientist or professional observer in a story.  These characters are calm, cool and dispassionate problem-solvers or investigators who usually have difficulty with personal and social interactions. Most often developed as a male character, this Character Type can also be an intriguing female role.

Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, Mr. Spock in Star Trek; Dr. Temperance Brennan in Bones; Agent Scully in The X-Files; and the title characters in Dexter, Monk and House are television examples.

Film examples include:  Ripley in Aliens; Father Damien Karras in The Exorcist; Dr. Matt Fowler in In The Bedroom; Andy Stitzer in The 40 Year Old Virgin and Melvin Udall in As Good As It Gets.

The Power of Reason eBook explains how all these characters are alike and how each character is made individually distinct.

Bones

by Laurie H. Hutzler

bonesI have become obsessed with the Fox Television procedural series, Bones. It's a show with an excellent mix of crime of the week stories and emotional stories between core cast members.  The core cast is exceptionally well-defined and Character Types are extremely clear. It's smart, funny and a fascinating world to watch.

The New James Bond

by Laurie H. Hutzler

casino-royale-iiThis month’s Notes from the Writers Room discusses how to transition a long-standing and much loved character.  I’m using James Bond as an example.  I will look at how screenwriters Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and Paul Haggis moved James Bond into the next phase of 007’s life in the excellent film, Casino Royale

This long-standing franchise is updated, renewed and refreshed for new audiences. This kind of character evolution is also critical in any long-running television series. The dynamics of an ensemble can change over time, requiring adjustments in a character. Transitioning a new character can help to take advantage of a newly cast actor’s strengths.

No matter how carefully a new character is crafted on the page he or she must be a character the actor can successfully play.  Conforming the actor’s character type and his or her fictional character type is much more likely to produce a standout performance.  All this must be done with real authenticity and a solid emotional foundation.  Read on to see how this task was accomplished in Casino Royale.

The Day After Tommorow the Movie Print E-mail
 Disaster Often Creates “Horror”

by Laurie H. Hutzler

the-day-after-tomorrowThe Day After Tomorrow  is a so-called “Disaster” Film. This category of films is often identical to horror films. The “monsters” in these kinds of movies are usually natural phenomena—Wind, fire, water, weather, earthquakes, volcanoes or plague. Whether the “horror” comes from outer space, the supernatural world or the natural world, reason is none-the-less overrun by chaos.

The main character in this film is reason-driven, similar in type to the protagonists in the film examples in my newsletter on Horror flims.  Unlike The Exorcist and In The Bedroom, discussed in a previous blog, The Day After Tommorow fails to create a satisfying emotional journey.

Let’s consider this recent release in detail and analyze how this failure impacted its critical and box office results.
